Leah,
I love your work. Can you tell me more about your process? I will be in New England in late October. Will you be showing anywhere at that time?
Carrie
Hi Carrie,
Sorry for taking so long to respond. After many months of working around the clock in preparation for three shows, I have taken the past month to travel and regroup a bit. Unfortunately this time away from the computer means that I have fallen behind a bit in responding to email and blog comments and these sorts of things. Now begins the daunting task of trying to catch up.
Now to answer your question.
I begin with photographs that either I have taken or ones that I have found on flickr and received permission to use. I print out the photo and adhere it to a piece of canvas before I begin painting directly upon it. I embelish some parts and cover up others, distilling the image to what feels essential to me.
Sometime I cut out parts of the image or embroider edges before I mount it to a wooden panel. At that point I allow the painting to continue beyond the edges of the canvas and onto the surface and sides of the panel.
Woops. Forgot to answer the 2nd half of your question. I don't currently have any shows scheduled for late October, but that might change. If you want to be added to my email list for show announcements, just send your email to me at leah@leahgiberson.com
