in the nick of time

Like many others, the past couple months have been really tough for me financially. But even with my shoestring budget and the holidays right around the corner, I couldn't resist purchasing this print by Beth Dow, which was just announced on Jen Beckman's 20x200.

Quick! They're going FAST!

Happy Holidays (to me?)

Sneak Peek

Just started a new series of paintings of the public pool in Red Hook. I've been commissioned to make a large painting of this pool, so I thought I'd start a number of small ones first and then decide which one to make larger. I'm loving these and am now I'm thinking I might make a few big ones. Now if only I had a studio large enough.

You can view the progress of this series on my flickr site

Back to School with Poppytalk

With September in sight, we are getting our last trips to the beach in while we can and (here in New England) noticing the first maple leaves already beginning to change color ever so slightly. With these seasonal tides shifting, I have been busy again in the studio and have finished a few new pieces just in time for the Poppytalk School Days market. Please come visit my table at Poppytalk and stay tuned for more new goodies to come over the next few weeks. Lots of new work based on photos from my recent trip to South Carolina.

I'll also be selling prints of new (and older) work. If you're in the area, come by and say hello! If you can't make it, I've got prints of these new pieces for sale at my etsy shop.

My own island

So this past Tuesday was my son's birthday and I was so busy cooking up a storm, wrapping gifts and toasting him (and myself) that I neglected to see who Tiny Showcase was going to unveil for their print of the week. I was so wrapped up in the festivities and already exhausted from my week that I didn't get back on the computer until the following morning.

When I did check in, I couldn't believe my eyes. As soon as I saw the image, it didn't surprise me one bit that the print was sold out, but when I realized that I'd never get to live with this image myself, the core of my heart ached. It's not often that I have such a physical and emotional response to a piece of art, but this was one I couldn't get over.

In a heart broken panic, I tracked down the artist, Nathan Abels and Ivar Zeile from Plus+ Gallery - asking (with fingers crossed) if they had any other prints. After many emails back and forth, I now have a new friend named Nathan and am the soon-to-be proud owner of the original, "Island".

I am a very happy lady.

... and hopefully have learned my lesson not to miss another TS print.

Vancouver Special

Thanks to Jennilee from walkingdistance.etsy.com for introducing me to the architecture style know as a "Vancouver Special" - sort of like a Canadian split level. I'm totally ready to make a new series of work dedicated to these amazing homes. Now I just need to find a way to get out there to take some photos, which really isn't going to happen any time soon. So the other solution is to find some photos to use to begin the series. If anyone sends me a photo that I end up using in a painting, I will give them a print of the piece and credit as the photographer. Anyone? Anyone?

Box Set

I recently found the work of artist/designer Stephanie Levy (Memphis born, now living in Munich) on Etsy and I became an instant fan. I'm especially obsessed with her "Trendfarben" series, where she collages and paints on boxes that jut out from the wall by 3-6 inches. They work alone or together - on the wall or stacked on a shelf. Her 2-D work is beautiful as well.

Art I wish I owned

I came across the photography of Carlo Van de Roer on the 20 x 200 site a couple months ago. The compositions and colors are incredible. Makes me consider abandoning my images of houses and only doing pools from here on out, but he's already done it so well. Guess I'll stick to houses with above ground pools.

Poppytalk Handmade Market

Just got news that I'll be part of the Poppytalk Handmade Market called, "Paper Pops! A Papergoods & Affordable Art Market & Showcase" May 12- June 6, 2008.

Thanks to my cousin, Jen, for the suggestion.

One foot in front of the other

I've avoided this whole blog thing for a long time now, because I haven't really had any interest in journalling publicly. But having recently opened an etsy shop, it seems that starting a blog is the next sensible step as I try to figure out how to make a living with my art and navigate this balancing act between being an artist, designer and mom. Hoping this will be a good place to gather and share inspirations, ideas, and new work.
